Food Pantry

by Kaitlyn Gibson

The LSUS Food Pantry has only been open for around five months, but it has done wonders to help students in need. Since November, they have given out over 2,200 pounds of food.

Students can do their part to help the Food Pantry in multiple ways. Donations are always accepted on the second floor of the UC where the pantry is located. If donating in person is not an option, students can purchase food on the Amazon wish list that will be delivered to the pantry. Monetary donations are accepted through the LSUS Foundation with the indication that the money is for the food pantry.

If you are apart of a group or organization on campus that is looking to help, events and food drives can be organized with Angel Martin. For example, on March 28, the Student Activities Board will be showing Aquaman as a drive-in movie. Students are being asked to bring food donations in return for watching the movie and getting complimentary popcorn.

Some prefer to donate their time. Volunteers are needed to help with staffing the pantry, stocking the shelves, or retrieving donations. Email inquiries can be sent directly to Angel Martin, or a link to sign up for time slots can be found on the LSUS Food Pantry page on the LSUS website.

The hours of operation are limited, Monday and Tuesday 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., and Wednesday and Thursday 1-4 p.m. Even when school is out, the pantry is still accessible. Appointments can be scheduled during school breaks by emailing foodpantry@lsus.edu.

The LSUS Food Pantry is a resource for students that need it. Students can be assured that they will not be judged, and questions will not be asked. The food pantry was created for a reason and wants to help reduce food insecurity so students can focus on their education.

Perishable and refrigerated items are accepted, and non-food related items such as personal hygiene products and household goods.

If you would like to donate, items they are currently running low on are:

* Canned / packaged meat

* Canned fruit

* Boxed meal kits

* Peanut butter / jelly

* Pasta

* Canned soups
